Dear RA or Rep,
Did you know that the average B.C. resident uses a whopping 490 litres of water every day? The CBC says that the average global citizen needs only 20-40 litres of water a day. That means up to 470 litres of water is wasted daily! Multiply this statistic by the number of students that live in your dorm, and you can see how alarming these numbers are.
Water wastage is just the start. Many students may not be aware of how much electricity is wasted by leaving windows open or not turning off lights when they leave their dorm room.
To highlight these environmental concerns, we’re launching Do It In The Dark: Get Turned Off. It’s the first program of its kind at Trinity Western University, and I’m quite excited about it!
Do It In The Dark is a month-long contest starting this November. We’re encouraging you to brainstorm with your residents to come up with creative ways to conserve resources and reduce waste. The dorms or apartments that do it in the dark best will win part of a $700 jackpot! The possibilities are endless, and I know you and your residents will come up with all kinds of great ideas. Start a recycling program in your hall. Institute a regular carpool into Langley. Set a mandatory lights-out time. Then, tell us what you’re doing!
At the end of the month, the dorms that meet the challenge of doing all they can to conserve energy and reduce waste will win some sweet stash.
Everything you need to get started is enclosed. I encourage you to discuss this immediately with your residents and friends! The more creative you are, the more energy you’ll save--and the more chances you’ll get to win some incredible prizes!
Is your dorm up for the challenge? Do It In The Dark: Get Turned Off. It’s your planet. It’s your dorm. You have 30 days to make a difference, and unlimited ways to win.
